You must shield your eyes (or camera) from ambient light. The best and clearest images are seen in a totally dark room with the LEDs below the cell about 10mm (1/2") max distance.
I haven't tried LEDs with magnifier lenses. Has anyone else that could comment here?
FYI: A small florescent lamp ring will work, but you do not see ellipses. It creates a diffused image similar to a 'donut' or torus. Place it below the cell (like the LEDs). Use one small enough that the cell is larger than it is.
